Students considering a gap year are faced with a bewildering range of choices. gapadvice.org aims to present the options in such a way as to make the choices easier. Students should be able to find the answers to most of their questions on this site. Please contact us if you have any issues you wish to raise: info@gapadvice.org

SCHOOL TALKS

It may be possible to arrange an impartial school talk on taking a gap year, which does not favour any one company.  A returned 'gapper' will normally attend.  If gapadvice.org cannot deliver the presentation, then  the same impartial presentation will be delivered by a reputable gap year organisation.  Again, please contact: info@gapadvice.org.  The talk lasts about 40 minutes and will cover:

  • What is a gap year?
  • When can you take a gap year?
  • Why take a gap year?
  • Reasons not to take a gap year
  • What do others think? eg UCAS and AGR
  • Applying to university
  • Researching your gap year
  • What can you do? eg volunteer, earn money, a course, travel
  • Where can you go?
  • How best to travel?
  • Key questions to ask yourself and others
  • What does it cost?
  • How to raise the money
  • Issues about gap years eg regulation, DIY, ethical issues, safety, codes of practice
  • .. and when you get home….!
  • My gap year experiences – the view of a returned ‘gapper’

Comments from schools include:

'Phil's talks are always great - informative yet relaxed and very thought provoking. He hits just the right level to keep a bunch of sixth formers interested and they always take away a lot of information. I would certainly recommend gapadvice.org to any school or college.'  Victoria Humphries, St Marys, Wantage.

'The girls at Putney High School found the talk useful, stimulating and thought-provoking. We will definitely be inviting Phil back.'  George Casley, Head of Sixth Form

'We were very pleased indeed with the presentation given on your behalf by Alice Baines from The Leap. The talk was much enjoyed by both students and their parents and Alice had just the right mixture of enthusiasm and common sense to engage her audience. We gained a very informative all round view of possible Gap year experiences plus a brief description of activities offered by The Leap at the end. Many students and parents stayed behind to question her further and she was unstinting of her time. Altogether a very successful evening thank you.'  Meg Denning, Clayesmoore School

'Once again, many thanks for your substantial contribution to a very successful evening last week. Everyone at the school was very impressed and the feedback from the students has been overwhelmingly positive so far. I hope you can make it next year?!...'  John Benjamin Ash, Head of 6th Form, Thorpe St Andrew School, Norwich

Contribution:

We ask for a £75 contribution for delivering/arranging the talk, towards gapadvice.org's running costs.

 Technical requirements

If a talk is required, the school should provide the equipment and facilities for a Microsoft Office 2003 PowerPoint presentation, the computer, data projector and screen to be set up by the school 20 minutes before the talk begins.  The presentation should be able to be loaded onto the school's computer through a CD and USB key.  Some presenters may have a short film presentation as well, so sound may be required, with DVD capability.
